about the artist
At the heart of our need to be seen by others is a desire to make the unseen parts of ourselves visible. Amanda Clyne sees this desire everywhere – in the extravagant dresses of haute couture, in the bust-like bouquets of floral still life paintings, and even in the ornamented surfaces of textiles. In these feminine displays, Clyne detects a psychology of the unseen.
Based in Toronto, Clyne approaches her art practice with a deep empathy for the viewer. Through the perceived aspects of pattern, texture, and colour, Clyne delves into the imperceptible: ruptures, obsessions, silences, and vulnerability.
Through meticulous processes, Clyne articulates an anxious inner life that craves a contemplative space of beauty and perfection. This need, expressed through the grid, begins with a desire for stability, but ultimately gives way to a quiet collapse into endless subtleties and imperfection. The grid recurs throughout Clyne’s work as both structure and metaphor, a visual system that promises order yet ultimately reveals its own fragility and porous boundaries.
Clyne completed a BFA from OCAD University in 2009 and an MFA from York University in 2014. Recent exhibitions include United Contemporary (Toronto), Gales Gallery at York University (Toronto), and the Orillia Museum of Art and History (Orillia). Clyne’s work has been exhibited in Europe, the U.S. and across Canada and is in the corporate collections of such companies as Mercedes Benz, Holt Renfrew and Astra Zeneca.
